The motor car is a modern wonder of social and economic engineering.

Here we have a manufactured need, no, a requirement, to spend a significant amount of your personal resources on a large chunk of metal and plastic, that for the majority of your ownership of it, does nothing at all. Just sits there, parked.

And to use this thing, you have to pay extra at almost constantly changing rates, to actually make it work. And let’s not even talk about the costs of maintenance so it will work when you actually want to use it.

Now some might say that if we had lives where the places we needed to go, for food, for work, for education, for recreation, were built closer to where we could live, we wouldn’t need to waste all these resources on these metal boxes. Or if we built enough public, shared transport, we could all enjoy a more equitable way of paying to move ourselves around our world, but who would want to live like that?

No, we want to be free individuals, beholden to the makers of these personal vehicles, beholden to the suppliers of the fuels for these vehicles, dependent on the conditions of the roads for these vehicles, and all the time using more and more of our personal resources to pollute the very air we breathe to be this free.

What’s not to love about this sort of freedom?
